About Us

photo of the front doorThe House

This house was built by a Leith wine merchant in 1823 as a townhouse for his family, and the building has witnessed a lot of changes over the years. The house was a rather sad old lady when we acquired her in 1995. Happily she's now restored to some of her former glory and is once again creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests who cross her threshold.

Garlands is a B listed building on four levels with the upper rooms accessed from a central, rather grand, staircase. The main architectural feature is the ionic pilastered doorpieces.

Your Hosts

Bill and IanMeet your hosts who will be looking after you while you're with us at Garlands.

Bill and Ian have been together for many years and bought Garlands together in 1995 to realise Bill's ambition to own and run his own business.

Bill's background is in catering, including running the restaurants and bars at Edinburgh's Lyceum Theatre, where he met Ian. Bill also spent some time in the wine trade (and he still whines from time to time) before taking the plunge and opening Garlands.

Ian took (very!) early retirement from his office job in 2009 and now regularly helps Bill serve breakfast in the mornings.
